Flower × Calligraphy workshop
5-6 July 2025

We are pleased to welcome Japanese calligrapher Sugano Matsusaki, for a special workshop combining
the art of flowers and calligraphy.

About
Sugano Matsusaki

Sugano Matsusaki is a calligrapher from Okinawa, Japan, with over 25 years of experience.

She has been exploring her own calligraphy based on traditional techniques and she embraces the philosophy that the pursuit of perfect beauty and line are fundamental aspects of calligraphy.

Through her writing, characters come to life on paper, finding their own form in her movement. Her calligraphy work can evoke a sense of rhythm and landscape.

About Calligraphy / Shodō

Calligraphy, or Shodō, is the art of writing with brush and ink—a quiet, introspective practice rooted in the philosophy that beauty arises from simplicity, balance, and the deep connection between breath and body movement. With each brushstroke, you experience the harmony of tradition and inner creativity.

About the Workshop

Sugano invites you to explore a deeply personal journey in calligraphy, where each brushstroke becomes a reflection of the heart. This workshop welcomes all levels—from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.
Together, you will create a one-of-a-kind decorative piece, weaving delicate flowers with the graceful flow of your own handwritten calligraphy to carry home.

You can choose the output from three options:

Mini Japanese garden box with Shodō

In Japan, there is a cultural practice called ichirin-zashi, which involves placing a single flower in a small vase. It reflects the Japanese appreciation for simplicity, seasonality, and the quiet beauty of just one bloom. In this option, you are invited to choose one fresh flower you like and gently place it in the quiet little garden with Shodō.

Kakejiku(Japanese hanging scroll)

A kakejiku is a traditional Japanese decorative art piece — a hanging scroll displayed in a tokonoma (alcove) and changed according to the season or occasion. In this workshop, you will write your own calligraphy directly on the kakejiku. Finally, you can add dried flowers and take it home as your unique artwork.
